Ever wondered how where you sit impacts a meeting or interview? There are definitely dynamics to consider when choosing where to sit in relation to the other attendees in the meeting room. In the western world, the most senior person in the meeting sits at the head of the table. While in Asia, the most senior person sits in the middle of one of the horizontal rows.
Here are some tips about seating positions and how they impact the dynamic of meetings. While many factors will determine the application of the points here, such as number of people in attendance, how early you are to the meeting and even the shape of the table, these tips can help at the very least by highlighting the forces at play and the advantages and disadvantages of various seating arrangements.
Share the corner to put them at ease
When you share one corner of the meeting table, the other person is more likely to be relaxed, comfortable and open to free-flowing conversation. This positioning allows for easy eye contact, freedom to use and observe each other’s gestures, and eliminates territorial division of the table. This can be used for introductory meetings and one-on-one presentations to establish rapport quickly and gain trust. In larger meetings it is easier to reciprocate cooperation from the person seated next you than anyone else at the table.
Side by Side for collaboration
Have a deadline looming? Sitting side by side is great positioning for collaborating and brain storming between two people. Most people gravitate to this position naturally when they are working on the same project. Depending on your level of comfort prior to the meeting there might be a feeling of discomfort or invasion of personal space because of the close proximity of the parties at the table.
Face-off for a power play
We’ve all experienced the tense atmosphere that sitting directly opposite someone (or in a competitive position) can create. In an office setting it can be used to establish a superior-subordinate role. In social research it was found that when seated across from someone else, people speak in shorter sentences and recall less of what was said. It was also discovered that those involved in the study were less likely to be persuaded than any other seating arrangement.
Circle, Square or Rectangle?
Square tables provide the opportunity to combine both corner and side by side seating while a rectangular table provides multiple competitive positions. It is said that King Arthur sat the knights around the round table to avoid the competitive dynamic and imply equality.

This is Spencer Anderson from The Rostie Group, and I’m here with David Potter from Citrix.
Q. Tell us a bit about your business and what are the specific areas that you guys specialize in.
A. We’re a software company. We have a range of online products that allow people to collaborate, work, and stay productive regardless of where they are.
Q. How did you develop your interest in the industry?
A. I came into tech marketing kind of backwards, I was in the advertising industry first and got into working on clients who were in tech business and gradually over time moved into working on the client side of the business and was lucky enough to join Citrix when we opened the office for our mobility apps business unit here a couple of years ago.
Q. What are the main differences between GoToMeeting and your competitors?
A. Whether you’re looking at GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar or any of our other products we really focus on a couple different things. The biggest one being ease of use because if the products aren’t easy for your customers or for you to use or your employees to use then you’re not going to see the benefit that you hope to. We also have a product set that is focused on businesses, so they’re not consumer products; they have really been designed with businesses in mind.
Q. How long has Citrix been with The Rostie Group?
A. We have been here at The Rostie Group for about three years since we opened since we opened our offices for the mobility apps and business unit here in Canada.
Q. How often do you use our meeting space and training space?
A. The great thing for the meeting space for us is that we have a relatively small team in Canada and the ability to have extra meeting rooms and scale up when we need it gives us the flexibility without the need to have to carry that extra cost in an ongoing basis.
Q. What is your experience working in this kind of an environment so far?
A. We have a great balance in this type of environment. We have a personal or a segregated office space here for Citrix which gives us the privacy but we also have access to the shared facilities such as the kitchen or the extra meetings rooms which has been great for us as we’ve grown
Q. What is the most exciting part of your job?
A. I think I have a really great job; I have lots of opportunities to do different things on an ongoing basis. There is a great opportunity to test and do new things whether it’s in social media or some of the things we’re doing to help support the sales team here in Canada.
Q. Living and working in downtown Toronto, Harbourfront/South Core, what do you love most about it?
A. I think for me I really like the way the South Core has been changing over the last number of years, despite the construction I think it will be well worth it in the end. I’m working here now as my second stint, my first being working at a university at one of the other buildings here and it’s amazing how much has changed. With the connection of the PATH getting you right downtown when you need to, particularly in the winters, the addition of UP is going to be great in the sense that if you’re travelling regionally you can quickly get over to Billy Bishop (Airport) to take a short flight, if you need to go a little farther the UP train will get you to Pearson (Airport) fairly quickly and painlessly once it’s up and running and I think the changes that are happening along the WaterFront make it a very vibrant place to work and live.

Soon we’ll be strolling along the revitalized Queens Quay’s generous pedestrian promenade and riding our bikes down the new Martin Goodman Trail. If you’ve been by the construction site in recent weeks, you’ve already seen the new street taking shape. The streetcars are running. The granite promenades on the north side are almost complete and those on the south side are well underway. The Martin Goodman Trail is also nearing completion and soon we’ll just be applying the finishing touches.

Inspections for choosing a meeting room provider can be particularly nerve racking. Agreed. However, we’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be and here are a few short and sweet tips.
Put yourself in the attendees’ shoes
Do a surprise tour. Pop in unannounced and save yourself the distraction of the red carpet treatment that’s doled out for a prearranged visit.
Know your parameters
Your goals and parameters should ideally dictate the facilities you end up choosing. If you want to have excitement and interaction then your venue should have theatre capabilities and suitable tech support. If you are conducting training then you will do better with a location that can eliminate interuptions and has sound proof walls in each room.
Is there dedicated IT support? If not , are you able to risk running into a technical hitch right before your meeting begins and not have dedicated IT staff on hand?
Make a note of all the things that are important to you such as catering options that fit your budget, amenities, view and flexibility.
Take a closer look
Conduct a deep analysis to compare sites’ strengths and weakness. Evaluate locations based on relevant factors such as proximity to public transport, restaurants, parking, airports etc
How safe are the surroundings and how easy is it to get around if your attendees decide to leave the meeting room site?
