Queens Quay Re-Opening & Redpath Waterfront Festival

A big THANK YOU to Waterfront Toronto, the City of Toronto, Redpath Waterfront Festival, Waterfront BIA and all those who have been a part of the Waterfront revitalization project. After three years of construction, Toronto’s revitalized waterfront boulevard is open! We are overjoyed to have our work community looking so beautiful. The Waterfront Toronto Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at Simcoe WaveDeck was a great start to a weekend full of activities. From Stunt Dogs and dance troupes to the Wine & Spirit Festival and Sweetness Pride Beach Party, there was something for everyone. It was great to see local community members, workplace staff and businesses coming together to celebrate the stunning Toronto Waterfront. Check out some of our favourite moments in the photos below!
Toronto’s Waterfront will be an attractive spot this summer. Come and see Queens Quay bike path and red brick walking path, now smoothly integrated with the TTC streetcar system providing a dazzling new view with breathtaking skylines. After years of hard work, the outcome is beyond what we expected and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of such a wonderful work community!
Check out http://www.waterfrontoronto.ca/ for more details on the revitalization project.

Lunch ‘n’ Learn Retrospect

The Rostie Group wants to thank Elaine Newman, Founder and CEO of Global Learning, for providing an insightful and engaging presentation on ‘Unconscious Bias’ on Wednesday. Elaine masterfully highlighted the most popular types of unconscious bias in the workplace and got all attendees to share in some interesting mind-boggling activities. Concurrently Elaine introduced us to the concept #WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?). We should always remember to ask ourselves WIIFM before committing to a project or goal? Rhonda Singer, VP of Global Talent at Global Learning
was also present to contribute some of her wisdom on the topic.
Over lunch we learned that unconscious bias is present in the minds of everyone in society, and it has a large effect in all workplace environments, from entry level hiring processes to who is promoted to CEO. One can become aware of their own and others unconscious biases and work to encourage behavioural and cultural change.
Elaine provided valuable resources including the implicit-association test (IAT) found at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html
The test is a measure within social psychology designed to detect the strength of a person’s automatic association between mental representations of objects (concepts) in memory. Check it out for yourself and you may be surprised by your results! There are also some great books to read on the topic, such as
The Blindspot by Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald http://spottheblindspot.com/the-book/
and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.
Most importantly you should visit http://egloballearning.info/ to learn more about unconscious bias and Global Learning’s programs. Thank you again to Elaine and Rhonda and we look forward to planning another Lunch ‘n’ Learn with you soon!

The 27th Annual HOPE Volleyball tournament to raise money for local charities was a great success! Rostie tenants PMC and Stafflink Solutions had employees participate as well as our own Abigail Bristow and Charles Anderson from the Rostie Group. The team name was “Sets on the Beach” and the weather was wonderful on Toronto’s Electric Island!

We are looking forward to this week’s lineup of events including the TD Toronto Jazz Festival at locations across the city, and the beginning of Luminato, Toronto’s international multi-arts festival. In the South core of Toronto the Redpath Waterfront Festival – Party on the Promenade #POP15 begins on Friday June 19th right outside our door at Queens Quay. The Rostie Group will be in attendance, so come check out the scene and say Hi to us! The weekend will be packed with events for POP across the waterfront of Toronto featuring the Wine & Spirit Festival at Sugar Beach, Dock Dogs dog jumping and diving, and the Sweetness Pride Beach Party on Sunday, June 21st celebrating the beginning of Pride Week here in Toronto.
Come on down and enjoy all that beautiful Toronto has to offer this week.

Addressing Unconscious Bias Lunch ‘n’ Learn Presented by Elaine Newman, Founder and CEO, Global Learning

20150602 - Global Learning - Unconscious Bias Image - Brain Process Speed

Overview

Everyone has bias; it is part of who we are. Bias is best described as a mental shortcut: we often use readily available thoughts and personal views to help us make decisions and establish opinions. The problem with biased thinking is that it frequently leads to an inaccurate understanding of a person or a situation. This inaccuracy can mean we see a person or a situation in a more positive way or a more negative way which impacts our choices around innovation, hiring, engagement, management, promotion and our overall interactions within our teams and organization as a whole.  Come to this hour long introductory session on the fundamentals of unconscious bias and how it impacts our actions and reactions in our workplace and marketplace.

Bring your own lunch and listen to Elaine Newman, Founder and CEO of Global Learning Addressing Unconscious Bias!
