September Roast of the Month

At The Rostie Group, we are proud to brew coffee from local roaster Reunion Island Coffee. Located in downtown Toronto, Reunion Island Coffee is Canada’s largest coffee roaster powered 100% by green energy, and is committed to sustainability—for example, they are certified by B Lab as an industry leader in social and environmental performance. Their coffee beans are sourced responsibly, and are certified Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, or are Direct Trade beans.

Each month, we highlight a different blend, which we serve in our meetings at our reception area. Make sure to order your coffee urn for your meeting and try some of Toronto’s best coffee.

This month’s coffee is Reunion Island’s EMPIRE French roast. Using beans which are hand-picked from high-altitude Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Latin America, EMPIRE French roast is a full bodied dark roast, darker than traditional French roasts. The coffee is roasted to the point where the beans reach a deep, dark brown colour, and aromatic oils coat the surface of the beans. Roasting beyond the second crack of the beans to develop this color brings out bittersweet, smoky notes in the beans, and mutes the brighter notes. All of the beans used in Reunion Island’s EMPIRE blend were selected to contribute to the blend’s full body and darker cocoa notes.

Don’t miss your chance to try it – EMPIRE is only available through the month of September. Thank you to Miller & Bean for providing us with the wonderful coffee.

Waterfront BIA Singing Ambassadors perform at The Rostie Group

The triple award-winning Singing Ambassadors™ presented by The Waterfront BIA return for their sixth year on Toronto’s Waterfront. Eight lively ambassadors will perform impromptu a cappella renditions of classic and modern summer hits and offer assistance, directions and recommendations to visitors on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, from 11am to 6pm, June 22 until September 4. Visit www.waterfrontbia.com for more information.

“The Singing Ambdassadors make people smile and join in as they inform and perform along Toronto’s vibrant Waterfront,” states Carol Jolly, Executive Direction, The Waterfront BIA. “They not only share information and help direct people to the many amazing places on Toronto’s Waterfront but their a cappella performances enhance the visitor experiences all summer long.”

The 2017 Singing Ambassadors are Aisha Barrow, Erin Horan, Crystal Huang, Asha James, Daniel Lord, Russell Niessen, Jackson Smylie and Braeden Soltys. They are split into two quartets that will perform ten a cappella summertime favourites, plus the unofficial anthem for the province, in key locations and busy daytime spots along the Waterfront. Each song has been arranged by internationally-published composer, arrange and performer Aaron Jensen.

Get into the groove and dance on the waterfront with the Singing Ambassadors this summer. Their song list includes: Happy by Pharrell Williams; Summer Vibe by Walk Off the Earth; Sh Boom Sh Boom by The Chords; It’s All Right by The Impressions; Good Day Sunshine by The Beatles; I can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash; I Get Around by the Beach Boys; Under the Boardwalk by The Drifers; Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel; Jump in the Line by Harry Belafonte and Ontario 150: A Place to Stand by Dolores Clarman and Richard Morris.

Wearing The Waterfront BIA branded polo shirts, windbreakers, back packs and festive fedoras, the Singing Ambassadors will be easy to spot as they distribute savings cards and information on key local activities to keep Torontonians and tourists well-informed of all that the Waterfront has to offer. Throughout the summer, they visit members daily to gain updates and perform. In addition, they ride the sponsored City Sightseeing Toronto double-decker tour buses to explore the City’s top attractions and spread the word about the Waterfront. Special appearances are also made at member, resident and neighbouring events including the Waterfront Artisan Market, the Redpath Waterfront Festival, Sail-in Cinema, Union Station, Ripley’s Aquarium and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to name a few.

The Singing Ambassadors help to make the Toronto Waterfront a welcoming destination and have a positive impact on the newly revitalized pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood. The program is made possible with assistance from Canada Summer jobs.

7 Questions to Ask Before Submitting Your Resume

resume

So you’ve decided it’s time to look for a new job and you need to update your resume. Don’t be overwhelmed, don’t panic. It’s a daunting task to be sure but if you keep things simple it will be a whole lot easier!

While I’m not a professional resume writer, as a recruiter I’ve seen a lot of resumes cross my desk. I’d like to share a few basic tips with you.

Here are some questions you need to ask yourself:

Does my resume clearly reflect my experience in terms of the work I’ve been doing over recent years and is it pertinent to the kinds of jobs I’ll be applying for?

Are you looking for a senior sales representative position? If so, why do you have exhaustive details about an inside sales role or tech support position you had 10 years ago? One or two lines highlighting the most pertinent details is enough.

Your current and most recent roles are where you really need to show how you shine. This is your opportunity to show what why the company you’re applying to need to meet you. Be concise and highlight your achievements.

For example, if you’re a sales rep your resume should clearly state:

• who did you sell to (enterprise, mid-market, financial, F-100, etc)
• what did you sell to them (hardware, software, IoT, Cloud, etc)
• what were your results (120%, 150% of quota?)

Is my resume professional and easy to read?

I see a lot of resumes with all kinds of graphics, information up one side and down the other and quite frankly it’s distracting. Worst of all, you’re at risk of your “message” getting lost.

Does my resume contain the key words that HR is probably using to screen?

Most HR folks are going to use some form of keyword search and you need to be aware of this. If the role is selling software to large enterprise accounts then you need to make sure those keywords are on your resume – but don’t get carried away, you want them to see the fit, not think you’ve simply copied the job description.

Is my name and contact information clearly visible on each page of my resume?

Sounds obvious, right? You’d be surprised how easy it is to forget. Using a “header” is a great way to go – every page must have your name and contact information.

Is my resume too long?

Chances are, it is. Your resume should ideally be two pages – three at the most. If your work, by nature, is highly detailed, then create a separate project based document – just make sure that the key points are covered in your resume.

Did I use spell-check and check for grammatical errors?

Hope you did – as you know, a word can be spelled correctly yet still be incorrect!

Do I need a professional summary?

A well thought-out professional summary can be a wonderful thing…but you need to put your heart and soul into it. You need to ensure that your experience and goals align with the role you’re applying for. I have seen candidates miss out on an opportunity because of their professional summary – i.e., highlighting strong leadership skills – but applying for an individual contributor role. An eagle-eyed HR rep will pick out these inconsistencies.

I realize that these points only scratch the surface but hopefully they’ll help you to create the type of resume that human resources and hiring managers will make the time to read.

Lemons – The Key to a Healthy Workplace

Why did the lemon go to the doctor? It wasn’t peeling well.

If you’ve ever heard the term “Lemony Fresh” – you’ve definitely thought about flavoured water, delicious candy, a good joke or cleaning products.

But, what if lemon scent was more than just a reminder of being fresh and clean?

Lemon scent actually promotes concentration and has calming and clarifying properties that are helpful when you’re feeling angry, anxious or run down.

Lemon also has antiviral and antibacterial properties and can help fight sore throats and colds by boosting the body’s immune system and improving circulation.

Here at The Rostie Group we believe in keeping your mental and physical well-being in tip top condition, especially with cold season right around the corner.

Starting this fall season, The Rostie Group will be inserting lemon scents around the business centre to help promote a healthier work environment.

Your meetings in Toronto are sure to be productive; thanks to the combination of hosting your meeting on Toronto’s Waterfront and the hint of lemon zest in the air – your guests will be experiencing luxury. An enjoyable environment provides the basis for a successful meeting.

Come see (and smell) for yourself. We look forward to seeing you soon! Have a happy, healthy and lemony fall season!
