Lunch ‘n’ Learn Retrospect

The Rostie Group wants to thank Elaine Newman, Founder and CEO of Global Learning, for providing an insightful and engaging presentation on ‘Unconscious Bias’ on Wednesday. Elaine masterfully highlighted the most popular types of unconscious bias in the workplace and got all attendees to share in some interesting mind-boggling activities. Concurrently Elaine introduced us to the concept #WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?). We should always remember to ask ourselves WIIFM before committing to a project or goal? Rhonda Singer, VP of Global Talent at Global Learning
was also present to contribute some of her wisdom on the topic.
Over lunch we learned that unconscious bias is present in the minds of everyone in society, and it has a large effect in all workplace environments, from entry level hiring processes to who is promoted to CEO. One can become aware of their own and others unconscious biases and work to encourage behavioural and cultural change.
Elaine provided valuable resources including the implicit-association test (IAT) found at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html
The test is a measure within social psychology designed to detect the strength of a person’s automatic association between mental representations of objects (concepts) in memory. Check it out for yourself and you may be surprised by your results! There are also some great books to read on the topic, such as
The Blindspot by Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald http://spottheblindspot.com/the-book/
and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.
Most importantly you should visit http://egloballearning.info/ to learn more about unconscious bias and Global Learning’s programs. Thank you again to Elaine and Rhonda and we look forward to planning another Lunch ‘n’ Learn with you soon!
