The Global Workspace Association’s annual conference was a success!

The 28th Annual GWA Conference was held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton, Florida from September 10-13. The Rostie Gorup had a blast. Charles Anderson describes his experience:

The first few days involved day long information sessions that were immensely captivating and educational. The actual workshop portions of the conference were certainly awesome however they were only a portion of what make the GWA conference as great as it was. The people are probably what I took away as the most enriching portion of the week. Connections with people all over the world all evolving at the same time as you, working in the same industry as you and being able to pick said people’s minds was simply fantastic. Not to mention the great food throughout, and just being in South Beach, Florida at all!

Thanks for my Sight Night – 25th Anniversary of the Eye Foundation of Canada

Thanks for my Sight Night

The Rostie Group is a proud supporter of the Eye Foundation of Canada and would like to invite you to the EFC’s annual Gala – Sight Night! Our very own Charles Anderson recently travelled to India for a pioneering eye surgery and we want to bring attention to and support the Eye Foundation of Canada. Eyesight is often taken for granted but it is something quite precious that we must acknowledge and support. Charles will be speaking at the Eye Foundation’s Sight Night about his journey and we would love to invite you to attend.

WHY?

  • Sight preservation does more to maintain the quality of our lives than anything else.
  • The number one cause of blindness in adults is diabetes.
  • The risk of getting cataracts severe enough to restrict driving ability by age 80 is almost 100%.
  • Vision is precious to each and every one of us.

The Eye Foundation of Canada (EFC):

  • EFC has raised community awareness by organizing The Toronto Glaucoma Initiative (TGI) and “Sight Days with the Blue Jays” in collaboration with CNIB. EFC has also sponsored several in-house ophthalmic research studies and funded external research grants in diverse areas of ophthalmology.
  • Since 1991, EFC awards summer scholarships to outstanding medical students to encourage them to pursue academic careers in ophthalmology. A joint western EFC branch was established in Calgary and Edmonton in 2012 to better serve the Prairies and British Columbia. To date, over 30 of Canada’s leading ophthalmologists owe their start to your generous donations to EFC. In fact, Sight Night and other EFC efforts have raised over $1,000,000 to preserve eyesight! To continue its success, The Eye Foundation of Canada needs your support at Sight Night 2014. Sight Night is an opportunity to meet interesting people over a delicious meal with entertainment.

The Counter Offer

Contributor:  Pamela Inglis, Recruiter – Rostie & Associates.

Okay.  This is a tough one.  I know there are a lot of articles out there about this subject – written by people far more eloquent than I am.  But, they basically all say the same thing:

DON’T DO IT!

You’re always going to find someone who will tell you that they took a count-offer, got a great big raise and things couldn’t have worked out better.  Believe me, they’re the exception.

Consider things from your employer’s perspective.  Here you come, offer in hand from a competitor.  Do they really want you going there?  I’m sure there are many reasons why they wouldn’t, regardless of how much integrity you have.  Perhaps you’re a sales rep and you’ve got deals underway.  Do they risk losing the deal if you’re not there to close it?   Perhaps the timing isn’t good – maybe, unbeknownst to you, one of your colleagues just gave their notice.  Regardless of the reasons they’re going to be in the position of having to back-fill your role – and not at their convenience.

If you do accept a counter-offer you need to be prepared for the consequences  because they are not going to forget that you (probably) took time off to interview elsewhere and were seriously considering leaving their employ.  Could be an opportunity for a promotion that passes you by; or no raises again – ever.  Or, worst, and most likely case, they will let you go when it’s convenient for them.  And that opportunity you had?  Long gone.

So, consider this, if the only reason you’re considering making a move is salary, pull up your garters and have an open and honest talk with your boss.  I know what you’re thinking, it may not go well.  And it might not.  But at least you’ll know where you stand.

You also have to consider that if they’re not willing to give you a raise, one that you truly believe you deserve, then it’s probably time to call your favourite recruiter.
